In what is seen as a new twist of events, newly formed GNU political party emerged tops in the Mathira by- election, a region considered a PNU strong hold. Big guns from the PNU party including Kiraitu Murugi, area Member of Parliament, Ephraim Maina and Johnston Muthama had spent all their time during the weekend drumming support for the PNU candidate Baldwin Mwai who managed to gather a total of 701 votes against his GNU rival Jackson Kibutu Thagana who doubled him with a total of 1529 votes.
